Driving under the influence of alcohol is highly dangerous and can result in serious consequences for you and others. Here, the facts related to drink driving and the law in Michigan will be discussed, to give you an idea of what you are up against if you find yourself drinking and driving.
In Michigan, it is illegal to drive in your alcohol blood content is above 0.08, so long as you are above 21 years old. If you are below 21, that figure goes down to 0.02, and you have to have consumed the alcohol as part of a recognised religious ceremony (in other words, if you drink illegally, you will be in trouble regardless of what your alcohol blood content is). If you are under 21, you also cannot transport alcohol unless you are accompanies by someone over the age of 21. This applies while driving and also applies if you are stationary in a parking lot.
In order to avoid legal action, your best bet is to simply not drink and drive. You will be unable to tell what your blood alcohol content is, so there is no way of judging whether you are over the limit or not. Drink driving is incredibly dangerous and drunk drivers have been responsible for many deaths and serious injuries where the injured party has been left permanently disabled. It is certainly something that is unquestionably not worth risking.
The police are very observant when it comes to drink driving offenses, so don’t think you won’t be caught. There are many warning signs for how drunk drivers drive. They often weave about in their lane and sometimes end up in another lane. They will also sometimes go up onto the sidewalk or they will speed up too quickly or drive too quickly. Alcohol lowers inhibitions, so it is very common for drink drivers to break the speed limit – and this is a sign that police cannot fail to pick up on.
Drink driving offenses are punished severely in Michigan. Even with your first conviction, you will be required to give up your license for at least 6 months. This is the minimum sentence, so be warned that the consequences are severe.
