How I conquered drug addiction 2
Last Updated on Tuesday, 5 January 2010 12:51 Written by editor Thursday, 7 January 2010 08:00
That was the day when I overdosed on drugs and came close to dying. Luckily, I was discovered in the nick of time and taken to a hospital that is renowned for the treatment that it offers. Lying in my hospital bed, I couldn’t meet my parent’s eyes. I knew I had let them down real bad and in spite of all the support and love that they had rendered me. That was the day I vowed to do anything in my hands to get clean. I started to take small steps towards achieving my goal. As in the hospital I had quite a bit of time to think I introspected and analyzed what were the triggers that made me reach out for the drugs and how I could avoid it.
As soon as I was out of the hospital my parents signed me up for one of the very best of in-house residential rehab programs in Michigan. This was the first time that I didn’t resent their intrusion and was glad to join the life saving Drug rehab program. This program was for 28 days and had all the facilities to enable drug addicts to come out clean and remain so.
I made a lot of friends at the drug rehab center with people of all kinds who were fighting the same struggles against the clutches of drugs as I was. The staff out here not only looked after your physical well-being but the counseling sessions helped one learn more about oneself. The spirituality sessions had a great impact on me and made me feel comfortable with myself and calm me down. I was able to draw great strength from within me, which had been greatly missing before.
The community support that we were able to build up within the pristine surroundings of the rehab center helped conquer the drug addiction before it completely destroyed me. I had heard someone say once that if you are addicted to something you remain addicted to it throughout your life. Well, I am a living example of having proven that wrong.
I have now been out of rehab for the last 5 years and never once have I touched drugs again. Not to say that it has been an easy task. There have been a number of instances when the temptation could have over taken me, but I have drawn strength from my internal reserves and declined.

How I conquered drug addiction
Last Updated on Tuesday, 5 January 2010 12:47 Written by editor Tuesday, 5 January 2010 07:55
Well, let me tell you about my trip to hell and back. I actually was one of the lucky few youngsters in the state of Michigan, who was able to conquer drug addiction and get a grip on my life before it destroyed me.
Every year, I would vehemently state that I was going to stay clean throughout the year. In fact, every year that was the top most on my new year resolution list. I did succeed in staying clean for a while and then would be placed under a situation that was stressful or made me anxious and could get hold of drugs easily. Those made me give in to temptation and desire and just let myself slide down the dark tunnel of drug abuse.
I would wake up after days of not knowing what had happened or even where I was and then hate myself for it. I would resolve to turn my life around and turn a new leaf until the next time around. I could see my life going nowhere.
I can certainly not blame my family for the state that I was in. They tried everything possible to ensure that I had all the things that a child need. However, deep down, inside me, I always felt unloved and unappreciated. This led to binge eating, which made me gain oodles of weight, this in turn led to great amounts of low self esteem and decreased confidence. When all my friends were out on dates, I was sitting at home watching the telly. Probably, this led to my dependence no drugs and then there was no looking back.
There was no looking back after that. I would lie and be manipulative and treacherous in order to hide it from my parents and sister. I would try hard, remain clean for a day or two and then slide back to the usual drug addiction.
I was within me crying out for help and wishing that my parents would do something about it. But, I can’t blame them, because although they knew something was wrong with me, they couldn’t place a finger on what it was. Or maybe they were in a state of denial as I wasn’t one of those usual kids who fall for drugs.
Until one day destiny decided that I either stop the drug abuse or ………….

3 most popular abused drugs in Michigan
Last Updated on Friday, 22 January 2010 02:45 Written by editor Monday, 21 December 2009 06:56
Michigan like most other states has a problem with people who seriously abuse drugs. Among the top three categories of those who abuse drugs are marijuana, alcohol, and prescription drugs. Regular surveys by both state and university officials has shown that drug abuse in all three of these categories is on the rise within the state especially among teens and college students who are less likely to be aware of the ramifications of their drug use.
Prescription drug abuse
The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy as well as many local university studies have warned that Michigan has one of the highest rates of prescription drug abuse across America as teens are choosing to use the prescription drugs to get high instead of street drugs. Teens are most likely to consider prescription drug abuse less risky and have a 12% rate of drug abuse of this type among teens. At the college level prescription drug abuse increases to about 20%. Among the most popular prescription drugs that are abused are vicodin, Tylenol 3 (a form of Tylenol that contains codeine), and Ritalin which is used to help stay awake and concentrate.
Marijuana
Although marijuana use has fallen from its peak use levels in the 90’s, the number of marijuana users is once again continuing to rise at a steady rate. Many people point to the medical marijuana debate which leaves many people under the impression that marijuana is much safer to consume than a typical street drug. For this reason, many people do not consider marijuana a drug especially teens and college students who are more likely to smoke marijuana in the state of Michigan than engage in underage drinking.
Alcohol
Although alcohol use is decreasing among the general population in light of the rise of ‘safer’ highs such as marijuana and prescription drugs, overall it is still a large problem in the state of Michigan. As a result the state has stiffened its laws regarding drinking and driving and still has many harsh laws in place for those who are caught consuming the substance under age.
