Despite the fact that Michigan is known for its tough laws when it comes to the abuse of drugs, there are many drugs that are still rampantly used across the state. Addressing the problem of drug use is a large problem for law enforcement services throughout the state although the largest percentage of drug users and traffickers are found near Detroit within the city and suburbs. This is due to the fact that Detroit is often seen as the epicenter of the drug trade within Michigan and is in very close proximity to Canada for smuggling purposes.
One of the most abused drugs in the state of Michigan is cocaine and its cheaper derivative crack cocaine. Although the two drugs are a problem throughout the state of Michigan the largest problem areas are in Detroit, Lansing, and Ann Harbor all of which consider crack cocaine to be the largest drug problem facing their area.
Behind crack cocaine is crystal meth, which is becoming an increasingly severe problem across the state of Michigan. The drug is in high demand by many drug abusers in the state and has become widespread over the last decade. Although law enforcement officers are doing their best to crack down on crystal meth labs they continue to present a problem.
The most abused drug in Michigan is easily marijuana, which is easy to find and available in every region of Michigan much like it is in the other 51 states of the United States. There are also some reported marijuana cultivation farms throughout the state which law enforcement is continually cracking down on.
Due to its nightclub scene in Detroit, club drugs such as ecstasy also known as MDMA is a large problem. These club drugs usually come out in the rave and nightclub areas of Detroit although they have popped up sparsely in other areas of the state. Also abused mainly within the area of Detroit is heroin, which in the past few years has become a large problem in the metropolitan areas of the city among young adults and teens.
